Design of the Score [2]

If you have ever played Riven: The Sequel to Myst, or listened to the music of Shadow of the Colossus, you can see, hear, and feel a particular atmosphere, an atmosphere started by the game ICO. While not epic by any standard, ICO’s score set the bar high for every game to follow. Music only plays during cinematics, when the player enters an important area or, when they unlock a key puzzle. Anywhere else, all one hears are the footsteps of ICO and Yorda as they navigate the depths of the castle.

The theme from Castle in the Mist forms the backbone for the rest of the score. In this way, the music is very akin to the musical storytelling found in film soundtracks. Patrick Doyle’s Thor is a particularly good example as, it demonstrates an element of character building otherwise absent from its associated motion picture. ICO’s score does much the same; by keeping a thematic record of the game’s experiences, the music can develop and mature just as the characters do. Tracks 03 Impression, 06 Who Are You? and 15 Collapse contain the recurring motif from Castle in various forms. [See page The Castle.]

Another motif is that of an evil presence. When the Queen or her shadowy servants arrive on the scene, the mood turns awry. 07 Darkness and 14 Entity share in the sense that this evil is more than some shadow, but contains a a supernatural, spiritual power that could only come from a Kami-like entity. It is the feeling of inky shadows and an oppressive weightiness that must be relieved.

Not all is dark, however. There are many pieces which offer respite. 05 Beginning, 08 Heal, and 11 Continue are pleasantly atmospheric, being not as strong as Castle, but much lighter and more gentle than 02 Coffin. The chords in no. 5 are bell-like, wet and shimmery. Being able to leave the Chamber for the first time feels sweet, yet melancholy for Ico and Yorda; they know they find brief freedom at the risk of ultimate imprisonment.

Their journey comes to a close with the song “You Were There.” All their striving, all their memories, all their hopes, their story told through a reflective, hopeful voice. Their fate is unknown, but at least for now they can find rest. A lovely melody to close a lonely tale.

Lyrics to ‘You Were There’ [3]

The island bathes in the sun’s bright rays.
Distant hills wear a shroud of grey.
A lonely breeze whispers in the trees.
Sole witness to history.

Fleeting memories rise,
From the shadows of my mind.
Sing “Nonomori,” endless corridors…
Say “Nonomori,” hopeless warriors…
You were there…
You were there…

Am I forever dreaming?
How to define the way I’m feeling.

You were there.
Countless visions they haunt me in my sleep…
You were there.
Though forgotten all promises we keep…

Slaves to our destiny.
I recall a melody.
Sing “Nonomori,” seasons lit with gold…
Say “Nonomori,” legends yet untold…
You were there…
You were there…

Happiness follows sorrow.
Only believing in tomorrow.

You were there.
Countless visions they haunt me in my sleep…
You were there.
Though forgotten all promises we keep…

The island bathes in the sun’s bright rays.
Distant hills wear a shroud of grey.
A lonely breeze whispers in the trees.
Sole key to this mystery…
