Characters (Shadow of the Colossus)

Shadow of the Colossus has a very small, but memorable cast; a young warrior, his love, a horse, a deity, and sixteen giants. Of all these members, the warrior and his horse are the only two that the story follows. The young man must do as the deity bids if he is to see the girl live again.

  1. Wander
  2. Mono
  3. Agro
  4. Dormin
  5. Colossi
  6. Shadows

Wander (ワンダ Wanda) is the protagonist of Shadow of the Colossus. He travels day and night to reach the Forbidden Lands in order to resurrect a girl named Mono. His faithful companion is the black horse Agro.

Mono (モノ Mono) is the young woman whom Wander brings into the Forbidden Lands. Her revival is his sole motivation.

Mono no aware (物の哀れ), literally “the pathos of things,” also translated as “an empathy toward things,” or “a sensitivity to ephemera,” is a Japanese term for the awareness of impermanence (無常 mujō) or, transience of things. [This includes] both a transient gentle sadness (or wistfulness) at their passing as well as a longer, deeper, gentle sadness about this state being the reality of life. — Wikipedia

A thing lent, a thing borrowed (かしも の, かりもの). “One of the primary teachings in the Tenrikyo faith is that our mind is our own, but our bodies are borrowed from God.” — Linguee

Agro (アグロ Aguro) is Wander’s trusty horse and sole companion. She carries him north to south, east to west, in search of Colossi.

The first issue was how to give real expression to a horse character; they don’t always obey, of course. It’s not like a car or a motorcycle, it won’t always turn when you say “turn!”. But on the other hand if it doesn’t listen too much then it’s stressful for the player. So we had to balance the two, to properly mimic reality but also maintain playability. — Fumito Ueda

Dormin (ドルミン Dorumin) is the mysterious, disembodied entity residing within the Shrine of Worship. He speaks to Wander through the large aperture above the Altar and provides him with a means of returning Mono’s soul.

[The name] Dormin is possibly a misconjugation of “dormit” (it sleeps) or play on the Latin word “dormiō”, which means sleep… Dormin’s powers remain locked away in the Forbidden Lands…waiting to be awoken by one who possesses the Ancient Sword. — TeamICO Wiki

The Colossi (巨像 Kyozō) are magnificent, towering behemoths formed of earth, architecture, and fur. Wander must find and destroy all sixteen if he is to fulfill his end of the bargain.

Shadows (影 Kage) are the dark apparitions Wander encounters in the Shrine. Five appear in response to his presence before vanishing by the light of the Ancient Sword.
